Dyer became a minister and married American comedian Ellen DeGeneres and Actress Portia de Rossi on August 16, 2008.
Dyer's first book "Your Erroneous Zones" was released on August 1, 1976.
Dyer said Nisargadatta Maharaj (Indian Guru of nondualism) was his teacher.
During the Depression, Dyer's mom worked as a candy girl making $17 per week in the East Side of Detroit. Dyer's father left his family.
Because of financial circumstances, Dyer grew up in a series of orphanages and foster homes until he was 10 years old while taking care of his older brother who was anemic.
At one of the orphanages, Dyer, who was naturally optimistic, tried to convince a new little girl named Martha that the home was not bad. He remembered saying, "This is a nice place! There are no parents here!"
At age 14 in 1954, Dyer contemplated speaking to Steve Allen on The Tonight Show, which actually manifested in 1976.
